Switzerland is larger and more varied than most people realise. There are alpine lakes that do not appear in elopement guides. There are valleys so quiet in September that the only sound is the wind. This is our guide to the places we love most — the famous ones, the less-known ones, and the ones we share only with the couples we work with.
Lauterbrunnen Valley — Classic for a Reason
The 72 waterfalls that cascade down the valley walls, the emerald meadows, the wooden chalets: Lauterbrunnen earns its reputation. It is busy in summer, but at sunrise — before the first trains arrive from Interlaken — it is extraordinary. Best paired with accommodation in Mürren or Wengen, accessible only by cable car, where the views open up across the entire Bernese Alps. Plan your ceremony for late afternoon, when the light falls directly into the valley.
Zermatt — The Matterhorn's Presence
You either feel the Matterhorn or you don't. It is not a background; it is a presence — a 4,478-metre tooth of rock that dominates every angle of the town. The Gornergrat railway takes you up to 3,089 metres without any hiking, and at sunset, when most visitors have descended, the light goes gold and then pink on the Matterhorn and the moment belongs entirely to you. Best season: late September to early October. Car-free, elegant, and unhurried.
Lake Lucerne — Romantic Stillness
Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) is perhaps the most romantic of Switzerland's many lakes. Lavaux Vineyard Terraces — Unexpected and Extraordinary
Between Lausanne and Montreux, the Lavaux terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site: 800 years of winemaking on steep hills above Lake Geneva. The light here in May and October is unlike anywhere else in Switzerland — soft, golden, and long. Perfect for couples who want something that does not look like an alpine postcard. Access is easy by train from Geneva or Lausanne. Combine with a private wine tasting and dinner at a local cave.
St. Moritz & the Engadin Valley — For October
The Engadin Valley in mid-October, when the larch forests turn amber, is one of the most quietly spectacular things Switzerland offers. St. Moritz anchors the valley with its glacier lake and luxury calm. The scale here is different from the more accessible Alps: wider, higher, and more remote. Best for: couples who want to feel genuinely far from everything, or who are planning a winter elopement (December to March) and want the full snow landscape.
